MONSTAR

#watchhh it #a high school musical show that manages to satisfy both my commercial and indie sensibilities (yes i do realize that's a paradox) #four for you Show, four for you #also let's not forget the hero of the series that is Seung Gi-lite #also the ridiculously pretty people in the show who rock at instruments #too bad they're asses of the first degree #and then there's the apathetic second lead #but not when it involves the heroine #who happens to be a badass warrior who takes no bullshit from anyone #together they make beautiful music #eargasm all around #the end

  1. I have heard this drama is amazing. (Not as epic as Gu Family Book, but I'm hopelessly addicted.) Checking it out asap!

    1. wow is Gu Family Book that good? I grew up watching epic stuff like Wind Cloud and Arching Hero, so I have pretty high standards for the wuxia/fantasy genre.

    2. I've hardly seen any historical dramas. Just never really been all that into them before. But I wet my toes with Queen In-Hyun's Man & Rooftop Prince (which were both half-historical) and then loved watch Arang & the Magistrate, since I loved the leads. That was my primary motivation behind watching Gu Family Book, too - Lee Seung Ki & Suzy. And it was a slow drama to get addicted to - but somewhere around 10-12 I got completely hooked.

But Monstar is really something else, too. I love when there's a ton of good dramas out at once. I Can Hear Your Voice is very interesting, too.

    3. I've only been watching snippets of Gu Family Book since it started in the middle of my semester so I can't comment, but it does have that addicting quality. Not sure if it qualifies as epic though.

I LOVED Queen In-Hyun's Man. Even if the finale could be better, it doesn't negate how strong the show was in every episode before that. Whole-hearted recommendation!

I'm going to start watching I Can Hear Your Voice too!! Lee Jong Seok is <3

    4. I caught up on I Can Hear Your Voice, and while I love the characters, I'm having trouble believing the storyline (not the hearing thoughts part, but the driver-slash-i'ma crazed killer part. Like seriously, WTF?! Also is that how court proceedings really go...)

Shall check out Gu Family Book, sounds like fun^^

    5. Yes - that psycho-killer-crazy guy is freaky! Very over the top. And I can't believe he is getting out! I'm not sure about the court proceedings part. Dangermousie on livejournal is a lawyer so sometimes she chimes in on certain dramas and gives her perspective. But that's still coming from a US background and I'm sure things are at least a bit different in Korea.

Have you seen the Jdrama, Smile? If there's a drama that will make you question legal systems, that's the one. I spent most of the drama raging against the bizarre legal proceedings. But that was mostly cause they kept making our poor woobie, MatsuJun, cry.

And Gu Family Book definitely isn't an "epic" drama. I just meant it's one of those rare dramas with an OTP that has hooked me to the point that it is literally all I think about - all day, every day - and I am listening to the OST on repeat. So it's epic to me.

  2. Hells yeah Monstar for the win!!
If you hadn't posted this, I would have. I don't know how I restrained myself last week.
Only one word: WATCH. I've never proclaimed crack dramas but this.be.the.CRACK.

    1. IKR, lately crack-y kdramas are so rare! It has one of the best pilots for a kdrama and the second episode was fantastic too (and so is the "singing with the little girl" in the third ep). No highlights in the forth one, but Nana is beginning to open up and that makes me happy? :)

    2. Yeah the fourth was a bit slower compared to those before but it was still a really strong episode - I like how a lot of times we're not told but shown things. I'm so conflicted about both male leads!! I like them both although Seol Chan never fails to make me laugh XD Sun Woo is sooooo swoony! And I'm starting to buy the idea that he might be the one important for Nana too, since she only seems to listen to what he says :D And they keep showing how they both glance at each other.

It's so rare to have so many characters to care about in a show. I literally want to know EVERYthing and I have so many questions after every episode. MORE MORE MORE!! I can't believe it's only 12 episodes :(

    3. Objectively speaking, Seol Chan The Manchild > Sun Woo. He may be immature, but you can tell the boy's got heart. (Also the way he's so polite and reserved towards his parents is KILLING me.) As for Sun Woo, I'm not happy with how he turned a blind eye when kyu dong got bullied every day like that. So CONS: APATHETIC, PRO: FACE.

    4. True that. That's why it's so much fun watching Seol Chan. How much do you love the parts where Seol Chan suggests something, Se Yi says no, Sun Woo says ok, so Se Yi says ok then? LOL I laughed so hard at those parts :D And you can almost believe she doesn't even know what she's doing. I wanna know what's the deal with his family too! Like was he adopted??

I think Sun Woo's got that image to keep, which is the bull Seol Chan calls him out on, of course. And I LOVED Se Yi when she asked him precisely that question, why does he allow for Kyu Dong to be bullied like that. I like that she called him out on that. But you also see that he's changing - I mean, yea he's doing it because of her, but he's increasingly getting in on the action, and DOING something. He even dissed Joon Hee to his face. So, there's hope yet!

Although that makes the second lead ship dilemma worse....
